Course Objectives:

This course offers a critical perspective on theories and practices of contemporary media art through lectures, screenings and two production-based projects. Students will examine new media work including mediums such as video, animation, photography, audio and Internet based artwork. Students will attend lectures, screenings and create media based artworks that engage with ideas presented in class.

Assignment #1, Oct. 3:20% 
Assignment #2, Nov. 7:20% 
2 Quizzes:20%, Oct. 17th & Nov. 14th: 10% each

Grading will be based on the general quality of the submitted work. Attendance is mandatory. The participation grade will be determined by the student’s contribution to a supportive and critical atmosphere during class.

Regular attendance is required to successfully achieve course outcomes. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to complete any work done in class. All work must be submitted via A2L by the due date.


Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:

Late assignments will be penalized by 5% per day of the week (weekends included). Extensions will be given if requested before the assignment’s due date and if the instructor considers the reason legitimate.

Academic Dishonesty

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:

  1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
  2. Improper collaboration in group work.
  3. Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.

Email correspondence policy

It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student.  Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.

Modification of course outlines

The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.

Other Course Information:

Students must be the sole author (or authors in the case of group work) of submitted images. All photos must be taken during the period of the assignment - not before. Students must be prepared to submit original photos as taken from the phone/camera on request - not doing so will result in a zero for the assignment.
