Christina Baade is associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies and Multimedia, where she is Chair of the MA program in Communication and New Media. She also holds McMaster’s newly created honorary title, University Scholar, which honors mid-career faculty “who have already distinguished themselves as international scholars,” and she is affiliated with the program in Gender Studies and Feminist Research, the Cultural Studies and Critical Theory MA Program, and the Electroacoustic, Space and Performance Research Centre. She is currently book review editor for the Journal of the Society for American Music.
Christina’s research interests centre upon how broadcasting (particularly radio) has intersected with musical performances and cultural meaning, with particular attention to the role played by gender, race, class, nationality, and sexuality. This work has manifested in projects on popular music and jazz broadcasting in the 1930s and 1940s at the British Broadcasting Corporation, including her award-winning book, Victory Through Harmony: The BBC and Popular Music in World War II (Oxford UP, 2012), as well as work dealing with the political economic, cultural, and performative changes in music broadcasting over a wider chronological and geographical span—including Music and the Broadcast Experience, a book coedited with James Deaville that is forthcoming from Oxford University Press in 2016. Drawing upon feminist theory and understandings of affective labour, she maintains an ongoing commitment to understanding the work of women musicians in popular music, ranging from the iconic twentieth-century British singer Vera Lynn to Beyoncé. Occasionally, she invited to speak on the radio about music and war, which she is happy to do.
Christina has published widely on popular music and jazz broadcasting in the 1930s and 1940s, the BBC, and music and cultural memory. Her widely reviewed book, Victory Through Harmony, which received an AMS 75 PAYS Publication Subvention, won the biennial Diana McVeagh Prize from the North American British Music Studies Association, the 2012 book prize from IASPM-Canada Chapter, and a Choice Outstanding Academic Title award. Her publications also include a special issue on “Music and Labour” for MUSICultures, co-edited with Susan Fast and Line Grenier;chapters in Big Ears: Listening for Gender in Jazz Studies (Duke UP), Music, Conflict, and Violence (Wesleyan UP), Ubiquitous Musics: The Everyday Sounds That We Don’t Always Notice (Ashgate), and The Routledge Reader on the Sociology of Music;and articles in Popular Music, Journal of the Society for American Music, American Music, Journal of Popular Music Studies, Feminist Media Studies, and Atlantis, A Women’s Studies Journal / Revue d’Etudes sur les femmes. Christina has served on the American Musicological Society (AMS) Council, the executives both the Canadian and U.S. chapters of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, and in several roles for the Society for American Music (SAM). Currently, she is outgoing chair for the SAM Nominations Committee and is serving on the AMS Performance Committee, which she will chair in 2017.
Christina Baade joined the McMaster University Faculty of Humanities in 2003. She holds a B.Mus. in clarinet and women’s studies from Northwestern University and an M.Mus. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In her past as a performer, she was a founding member of Yid Vicious klezmer ensemble, whose sophomore compact disc was issued by the Knitting Factory label, and appeared with ensembles including the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra.
