How independent musicians are negotiating careers in the new digital, policy, and communications environment: What does it mean to be a musician, now?

Guest Speakers: Casey Mecija and Heather Kirby

Bio: Casey Mecija is an independent artist, lead singer and songwriter of Ohbijou (2004-14, now on hiatus). Ohbijou received numerous grants (including Ontario Arts Council, Factor and Canadian Council Awards) and accolades (including international tours, spots on the top of music charts, and CBC radio support and recognition). International contracts with records labels Last Gang (Toronto) and Bella Union (UK, Europe and Japan); Funded tours in the last year across North America, Europe, Japan and most recently China; support team includes the Billions Booking Corporation, the Free Trade Agency, Belmont booking and Emerge entertainment; writing and recording residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Gibraltor Point on Toronto Island and Artscape in Peterborough, Ontario.

Heather Kirby is a sound mastering engineer, music producer, musician, educator, and bassist with Vag Halen and Ohbijou (2004-14). Heather’s production and engineering credits include Vivel Shraya and a long list of other Toronto artists; she also teaches music production courses at Ryerson (as a sessional) with an emphasis on encouraging the participation of women and trans people in this work; Ohbijou received numerous grants (including Ontario Arts Council, Factor and Canadian Council Awards) and accolades (including international tours, spots on the top of music charts, and CBC radio support and recognition).
